Interior Design Style Trends of 2007
Interior design in 2007 is all about creating natural, comfortable spaces. While designers and clients will continue to explore new design concepts and look for interesting ways to combine colors, styles, materials, and textures, the ultimate focus will be on creating soothing, warm environments.
Gone are the days of minimalist white spaces dotted with bold flashes of color and sleek – but often uncomfortable – furniture. Color makes a comeback in 2007, with a particular focus on jewel tones derived from the natural colors of semiprecious stones. These gem-inspired hues fall into three main groups: warm brown and orange tones; “mineral tones” like grey, black, and yellow; and cool Caribbean tones of blue and green.
City denizens seeking peace and relaxation in 2007 will turn to "cottage comfort" design that mimics the style of cozy, lakeside homes by focusing on natural materials and colors.
The preference for a natural look will perhaps be most evident in wood furniture, flooring, and accent pieces. Interior designers will emphasize the natural qualities of wood by selecting finishes that prominently display the wood's grain, imperfections, character, and age.
The already-popular rustic look of exposed brick and beams will see continued favor in 2007, as it complements the style of natural wood and deep jewel tones. Concrete - though in some ways the antithesis of nature - will no longer be banished to the outdoors or hidden under tiling or carpets. Considered the "new granite", concrete will be the material of choice for kitchen and bathroom counters.
In addition to the focus on creating natural environments in homes and businesses, designers and consumers will do their part to preserve the general environment by choosing energy-efficient home elements. Smart choices in windows, kitchen appliances, washing machines, and toilets will not only help the environment but also homeowners' pocketbooks, compensating for rising energy prices.
